Freaks - Brett Riley

Rating: 3 stars

Format: NetGalley audiobook

Challenge: none

Spoilers: no

got this from NetGalley in exchange for a review so thank you!

Freaks follows a group of friends who are bullied badly by 3 boys. They decide to do a ritual as a LARPing exercise and end up with powers. They also manage to bring in a being from another dimension who ends up wreaking havoc on their town.

This book was ok, I wanted to love it because the premise sounds awesome but it didnt quite live up to the promise. I absolutely hated Micah, which made it a bit hard to listen to because he was always there. The abilities they get are interesting, I especially liked the super senses and how they practiced their powers, it was a smart move. But the characters are a little flat and there’s nothing that happens which is really complex. It’s a pretty simple story and good for anyone who just wants to turn their brain off for some hours.

The narrator is very good! I liked her voice.

The Island - C. L. Taylor

Rating : 3 stars   Format : borrowed audiobook (library) Challenge prompt : Book Hoarder 2022 - a borrowed book  Spoilers : no The Island follows 6 teens who end up stranded on a deserted island and their phobias begin coming true. Or do they?  The writing of the teenagers was well done, and I liked the different viewpoints. The big reveal at the end was a bit…. Overdone. It was still surprising, I didn’t guess it but it’s not so rare.  This book was ok, I read it quickly but it didn’t hold my attention the whole time. But I’d like to read more by this author, they seem to write a bunch of psychological thrillers.

They Both Die At The End - Adam Silvera

Rating : 5 stars Format : owned physical book  Challenge prompt:  Popsugar2022 - A Booktok recommendation  Spoilers : yes  This book took me a few months to finish just because the title tells you how it will end and I didnt want to say goodbye to these characters. The love between Rufus and Mateo is so bittersweet. I ugly cried when Mateo died, but we all knew that’s how it would end. This is a wonderful book which reminds us to live while we have the chance - do what you want to, don't  let fear stop you. Its lovely but a lesson i think is hard to take onboard for some reason.  Recommended for those who love a good cry, bittersweet endings and queerness

Pull - Jaime Winn

Rating : 4 stars  Format : ARC ebook from NetGalley Challenge : none  Spoilers : sorta  Pull tells the story of two teens who are drawn to each other but is it good or is it bad?  I liked this book a lot although the whole time I was waiting for some religious nonsense to happen. It didn’t (yet?) but this is the first in a series. I’m interested to see what’s next for Mischa and Casey.  I felt for Mischa and what she was going through and I was so very happy with how it ended because I was worried for a bit there. Some shifty happenings are definitely going on so I’ll be looking out for the next book! I feel this was all just set up for the main happenings in the series.
